Money & Me Workshop for Teens - sign up today!

ROME, NY — June 25, 2010 DID YOU KNOW: 45% of college students are in credit card debt with the average credit card debt being more than $3,000? The number of 18-24-year-olds declaring bankruptcy has increased 96% in the last 10 years, according to the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions.

AmeriCU Credit Union Presents the “Money-Smart Workshop!” This week-long workshop, brought to you by Money & Me, a program funded by the New York Credit Union Foundation is geared toward educating high-school students about the key financial skills needed for college and beyond.

Time and place: AmeriCU Credit Union, Griffiss Business & Technology Park, Rome. August 2-6, 9a.m. – 12:30p.m.

The program:

-FREE -For teens ages 16-18 -Participants must attend all 5 days -Teaches teens the basics of handling their money -Hands-on experience -Acquire financial planning, saving and spending tips -Special giveaways and drawings including gift cards will be happening throughout the workshop including a grand prize to one student at the end for the All-New Flip Video Camcorder.

Money & Me teaches the essentials on a range of must-know topics:

• Budgets: how to make them, how to make them stick • Savings and checking accounts • Credit: the good, the bad and the ugly • Saving and shopping for a big purchase • Planning and investing info for the future

-Breakfast and lunch will be provided each of the 5 days. Lunch will vary from pizza and chips to wraps and salads. Water and juice will be available during the entire session. Cookies and fruit will be served as well.

Upon completion of the workshop, students will receive a “Money Smart” certificate and a t-shirt.
