EMV Debit

AmeriCU EMV Debit Cards

AmeriCU is excited to announce that we have begun to offer EMV chip enabled VISA® Debit Cards! EMV cards add an additional layer of protection to your purchases and protect you against fraud by making it extremely difficult for the card to be copied or counterfeited. The chip stores payment information required to authenticate, authorize, and process your transaction. It provides you extra security by encrypting your data when you use it at chip-enabled registers.

AmeriCU is now issuing EMV debit cards to members. Throughout the summer of 2017, all members will receive a new EMV debit card with new card number and expiration date.

Please Note: Your new card will have a new card number and you will need to choose a PIN. You will need to call 1.866.985.2273 to (1) activate your card and (2) choose a PIN. If you do not complete both of these steps, your card will not be fully functional. Instructions will be included with your card.

FAQs

What is EMV?

EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard®, and Visa®. EMV cards are embedded with a microchip. These are also called chip cards or smart cards.

When will AmeriCU have EMV chip cards?

AmeriCU is now issuing EMV debit cards to members. Throughout the summer of 2017, all members will receive a new EMV debit card with new card number and expiration date.

Why does my AmeriCU VISA® Debit Card have a chip?

Your card has been enhanced with EMV microchip technology. This chip will provide you with greater protection against fraud when you use it at chip enabled terminals and will enable you more convenient use when making purchases internationally. Many merchants outside the U.S. have already adopted chip technology, and it has become the global standard. U.S. merchants have begun to switch to chip enabled terminals and are expected to see more adopt this technology over time.

What does the microchip do?

EMV cards add an additional layer of protection to your purchases and protect you against fraud by making it extremely difficult for the card to be copied or counterfeited. The chip stores payment information required to authenticate, authorize, and process your transaction. It provides you extra security by encrypting your data when you use it at chip-enables registers. The microchip does not track or store your purchase history or provide location assistance if lost or stolen. It is only for adding an additional layer of fraud protection.

  • If you are using your card online or over the phone, nothing changes.
