AmeriCU Employee Giveback Spotlight: Gail Rizzo-Spilka

Gail RS FF Spotlight

At AmeriCU, giving back isn’t just something we do—it’s who we are. Our members and employees are deeply rooted in the communities we serve, and many are personally motivated to make a difference. This commitment reflects an essential value for us as an organization: supporting and strengthening our local communities. It’s one of the reasons people choose AmeriCU—not only for financial services but for the shared belief that together, we can create meaningful change.

Gail Rizzo-Spilka, AmeriCU’s AVP of Membership Development and a board member of the AmeriCU Charitable Foundation, embodies this value. Her passion for helping others stems from her own experience living with her brother-in-law, who has Down’s Syndrome. That personal connection inspired her to support Toomey Residential & Community Services, an organization dedicated to empowering individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.

1. What inspired you to get involved with this nonprofit? Was there a personal draw or value that drew you to help further their mission

After hearing about the remarkable work they do in Central New York, I felt compelled to join their mission.  Having my brother in law with Down’s Syndrome living with me for a number of years, I understood the importance of organizations that provide opportunities for community activities and  participation as well as support for living skills.

2. What’s something people might not realize about the work this nonprofit does?

Toomey provides invaluable support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through home and community-based services and residential programs. Additionally, they assist children facing mental health challenges who cannot remain in their homes and also offer the Supervised Independent Living Program, which helps foster youth aged 17-21 towards independence.

3. Can you share a memorable moment or story that really illustrates the impact of the nonprofit’s work?

I was aware of the community based services, but not aware that they have seven residential settings for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as a residential setting for children with mental health diagnoses. Touring these facilities and witnessing the individualized care provided, along with round-the-clock activities and supervision, was truly awe-inspiring.

4. How can others support this organization or its mission?

If others are looking to support this nonprofit, they can do so by spreading awareness, donating directly, or even joining the Board of Directors. Every bit of support helps make a difference.

Gail’s story is a powerful reminder of how personal experiences can inspire meaningful action. Her dedication to Toomey Residential & Community Services reflects AmeriCU’s core belief that when we come together, we can create lasting change in our communities. Whether through volunteering, advocacy, or financial support, each of us has the ability to make a difference. By supporting organizations like Toomey, we help ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. Together, we’re building stronger communities—one act of kindness at a time.
