We recently spoke with Danielle about her involvement with the Alzheimer’s Association, what inspired her to get involved, and how others can support the organization’s mission.
What inspired you to get involved with the Alzheimer’s Association?
For me, it’s personal. I lost my father to Alzheimer’s at the age of 58, and that experience changed my life. Since then, I have made it my mission to share the services, support, and educational resources offered by the Alzheimer’s Association with our community. Through my involvement as a Community Representative, Walk to End Alzheimer’s Committee member, and Chapter Board member, I strive to help others navigate the challenges that come with this disease and ensure they know they are not alone.
What’s something people might not realize about the work the Alzheimer’s Association does?
Many people don’t realize that the Alzheimer’s Association offers a free 24/7 Helpline, available 365 days a year. By calling 800.272.3900, individuals can speak directly with a trained clinician who can provide support, answer questions, and connect them with local services and resources at no cost. This resource is available whenever people need guidance, whether they’re living with the disease, serving as caregivers, or seeking information for a loved one.
Can you share a memorable moment that illustrates the impact of the organization’s work?
One of the most powerful experiences each year is the Walk to End Alzheimer’s held at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena in Syracuse. Participants choose a flower that represents their connection to the disease: orange for those who support the vision of a world without Alzheimer’s, yellow for caregivers, purple for those who have lost someone, and blue for individuals living with the disease. At the conclusion of the walk, participants place their flowers in the Promise Garden. Seeing thousands of flowers come together, each representing a personal story and a life touched by Alzheimer’s, is an incredibly moving reminder of why this work matters and the hope that fuels the fight against the disease.
What accomplishment are you most proud of during your time with the organization? It’s difficult to choose just one accomplishment because there have been so many meaningful experiences. I was honored to represent the Central New York Chapter at the Community Leaders Summit, a national gathering of volunteers from across the country who come together to share ideas and experiences. I’m also proud of the opportunities I’ve had to connect with community members at local events, whether helping families find support, listening to stories about loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s, or inspiring others to get involved with the organization.
How can others support the Alzheimer’s Association or its mission?
Raising awareness is one of the most important ways to support the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. More than seven million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, making education, advocacy, and support services more important than ever. I encourage anyone interested in learning more to visit www.alz.org or connect with their local chapter. There are many ways to get involved, including volunteering, participating in signature events like the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, advocating for those affected by the disease, or helping connect community members with valuable resources and support.
Danielle’s story is a powerful example of how personal experiences can inspire meaningful community impact. Her dedication to the Alzheimer’s Association reflects AmeriCU’s commitment to supporting organizations that provide hope, education, and essential resources to those in need. Whether through volunteering, participating in events, or raising awareness, each of us has the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Together, we can help advance the fight for a future without Alzheimer’s.
